DWA and VPS partnership has success for Liam

Youth Employment Scheme

As part of the recruitment process for the VPS, DWA regularly recruits candidates for the YES (Youth Employment Scheme) targeted at young people with a disability 15-24yrs of age. DWA received a vacancy for an Administration Traineeship in the CBD with the Victorian Equal Opportunity & Human Rights Commission (VEOHRC).

The traineeship was Full Time for 1 year and the successful applicant would gain qualifications in Certificate 3 in Administration, VEOHRC was looking for a person that could do a variety of administration tasks, involving answering phones, dada entry and other skills.

DWA job matched the role to potential applicants on the Disability Employment Register. Liam Fitzgerald was selected as the suitable applicant for the role. Liam was referred to DWA for assistance in gaining a position in the VPS by Andrew Buchanan from Workbridge, a Disability Employment Network provider.

Liam Fitzgerald

Liam has Spina Bifida (a physical disability) and required extra support and modification to perform the duties.

Liam is a wheelchair user and required appropriate access to the building and his workstation. Andrew from Workbridge also committed to providing any on the job support and study support that Liam required.

Liam was a perfect match for this role as his presentation, communication skills and enthusiasm was excellent and his details were forwarded to Inner East Group Training (IEGT) for an assessment. Karen from IEGT referred Liam to Ian Le Noury Manager, Corporate Services, VEOHRC for an interview. Liam was successful in gaining the position.

Ian le Noury indicates that “Liam's role with us is divided into two parts. He is assisting at reception, answering incoming telephone calls and transferring the call to the appropriate section of the Commission, greeting visitors and directing them to meeting or training rooms and processing incoming and outgoing mail.”

Liam is also providing a range of administrative services including ordering stationery, processing invoices and updating electronic data bases.

Liam is very skilled in using PC's and has quickly and accurately undertaken all of the data base work he has been given.

Liam enjoys his role at VEOHRC and gets along very will with his fellow work mates. His confidence has grown through regular interaction with staff and his work at reception. He joins in the banter of the staff lunch room and has already demonstrated his football knowledge by leading the staff footy tipping competition.
